Welcome to the official web site for the International Registry of Medical Support Hypnotherapists (IRMSH). IRMSH provides four major services for the medical community, the hypnotherapy community and patient population.
What is Medical Support Hypnotherapy? As an ever-increasing body of research lends greater scientific credence to the use of hypnosis and hypnotherapy to assist patients in accelerating their healing, controlling pain and facilitating recovery from medical procedures, more and more patients and medical professionals are looking for ways to incorporate these benefits in the health plans they are designing. Yet, with no governmental oversight, and a broad variance in training and even the theory behind the practice of hypnosis and hypnotherapy, a caveat emptor approach to a field that has long been misrepresented by the media makes hypnotherapy seem unapproachable to many patients and healthcare providers. IRMSH exists to regulate and maintain a demonstrated level of professional training, ability, reliability and ethics in the hypnotherapy community, so that healthcare providers and their patients can make use of the power of the subconscious mind with the guidance of competent professionals who know how to work with the healthcare system. There are some organizations of medical support hypnotherapists that require only filling out an online application (and the payment of a membership fee), IRMSH rigorously screens each potential member, requiring not just proof of training, but tangible proof of their ability to work with health-related issues in the form of a video of an actual session, and actual scripts. With IRMSH members there is also the peace of mind of knowing they have passed a criminal background check, and that they have received training in, and are held accountable to, a strict code of ethics. Then there are also organizations for “professionals” (which can mean anything from licensed physicians to pastoral and school counselors) that often have impeccable standards for membership as regards the professional status of their members position, but seem to view the actual hypnotherapy as merely a side-venture, often requiring as little as 60 hours of training in hypnosis and hypnotherapy, of which often even less is required as hands-on practice. Though this is a good start, to have a medical professional who has learned some techniques in hypnosis, effective hypnotherapy requires a dedicated and in-depth study of the subconscious mind, and the skill to communicate with it. IRMSH membership demands the highest standards in hypnotherapy practice. To qualify for membership, IRMSH requires:
